Background

Situated along Florida's east coast, Canaveral National Seashore offers visitors pristine beaches, diverse ecosystems, and a glimpse into ancient human history. With 24 miles of unspoiled shoreline, it's a haven for beachgoers, anglers, and wildlife enthusiasts. The seashore's habitats support a variety of species, including threatened sea turtles that nest along its beaches and numerous bird species that thrive in its lagoons and marshes. Visitors can explore historic sites like Turtle Mound, enjoy kayaking in Mosquito Lagoon, or simply relax on the tranquil beaches, experiencing Florida's natural beauty in its purest form.

History

Established in 1975, Canaveral National Seashore preserves the longest stretch of undeveloped Atlantic coastline in Florida, encompassing nearly 58,000 acres of barrier island, lagoon, and coastal habitats. The area holds significant historical importance, with ancient Timucua shell mounds like Turtle Mound and Seminole Rest, reflecting human occupation dating back over 2,000 years. The seashore also played a role during the space race era, as it lies adjacent to Kennedy Space Center, serving as a buffer zone for space missions. Today, it stands as a testament to the preservation of natural and cultural resources amidst Florida's rapidly developing coastline.
