Allagash Wilderness Waterway

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway stands as a testament to Maine's commitment to preserving its most pristine natural landscapes. Established in 1966 by the Maine Legislature, this 92-mile-long waterway was designed to protect one of the last truly wild rivers in the northeastern United States. Originally traversed by Native American tribes and early European explorers, the Allagash River became a critical transportation route for logging operations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1970, the waterway gained national significance when it was designated as a National Wild and Scenic River, ensuring its ecological and recreational value would be preserved for future generations.
