Located northwest of Dunseith, North Dakota, Butte Saint Paul State Recreation Area invites visitors to explore its scenic trails and delve into a poignant chapter of the region's history. The combination of panoramic vistas and historical landmarks makes it a must-visit destination for those seeking both adventure and reflection.
Butte Saint Paul State Recreation Area encompasses the 580-foot Butte Saint Paul, offering visitors a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. A circular trail leads hikers to the summit, where expansive views of the Turtle Mountain region unfold. The ascent, though moderate, rewards with a sense of accomplishment and a deep connection to the past, as one stands where early explorers once did. It's a destination that invites contemplation and a deeper appreciation for North Dakota's rugged beauty and storied history.
In January 1850, Jesuit missionary Georges-Antoine Belcourt and his companions sought refuge atop what is now known as Butte Saint Paul during a severe blizzard. To survive the harsh conditions, they dug into the snow on the summit. In gratitude for their survival, Belcourt named the hill in honor of Saint Paul. This act of faith and endurance is commemorated by a 12-foot stone cairn and plaque at the peak, serving as a testament to the area's rich historical tapestry.
