Brenton Point State Park

Introduction

Immerse yourself in the scenic splendor of Brenton Point State Park, where lush green lawns meet the deep blue sea, and the legacy of explorers is etched into the landscape.

Background

Situated along Newport's renowned Ocean Drive, Brenton Point State Park offers visitors sweeping views where Narragansett Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. The park's 89 acres are ideal for picnicking, hiking, fishing, and kite flying, with expansive lawns and coastal cliffs providing a picturesque setting. The Portuguese Discovery Monument, dedicated in 1988, stands as a tribute to navigators, adding a cultural landmark to the park's natural beauty. With its cool ocean breezes and majestic vistas, Brenton Point is a favored spot for both relaxation and recreation.

History

Established in 1976, Brenton Point State Park occupies the former grounds of one of Newport's grandest estates, once owned by Governor William Brenton in the 17th century. The estate later became a coastal artillery site during World War II. In 1969, the State of Rhode Island acquired the property under the Green Acres Program, transforming it into a public park that opened to visitors in 1976. The park's rich history is reflected in its landscape, where remnants of the estate's gardens and structures blend with military fortifications, offering a unique glimpse into Newport's past.
