Background

General Coffee State Park, often referred to as one of southern Georgia's 'best-kept secrets,' spans over 1,511 acres of diverse ecosystems, including cypress swamps, sandhills, and pine barrens. Visitors can explore approximately 13.4 miles of trails that wind through these varied landscapes, offering opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park's Seventeen-Mile River meanders through a cypress swamp adorned with rare and endangered plants, providing a serene backdrop for nature enthusiasts. The Heritage Farm is a highlight, where guests can interact with farm animals such as goats, sheep, chickens, and pigs, making it a delightful educational experience for families. With its blend of natural beauty and historical significance, General Coffee State Park offers a tranquil retreat into Georgia's pastoral charm.

History

Established in 1970, General Coffee State Park was named in honor of General John Coffee, a prominent planter, U.S. Congressman, and military leader. The park was donated to the state by a group of Coffee County citizens, aiming to preserve the region's rich agricultural heritage and natural landscapes. The Heritage Farm within the park showcases historical farming practices with log cabins, a corn crib, tobacco barn, cane mill, and other exhibits, offering visitors a glimpse into Georgia's rural past. Over the years, the park has become a sanctuary for rare and endangered species, including indigo snakes and gopher tortoises, thriving within its wiregrass communities and cypress swamps.
