Welcome to Oscar Scherer State Park, a hidden gem nestled amidst urban development, offering a serene escape into Florida's natural landscapes. Whether you're paddling along South Creek, hiking through diverse habitats, or observing unique wildlife, the park provides a refreshing retreat for nature enthusiasts.
Located in Osprey, Florida, Oscar Scherer State Park is a sanctuary for the endangered Florida scrub-jay and offers visitors a chance to explore one of the state's rare scrub ecosystems. The park features a network of trails that meander through scrubby flatwoods and along the tranquil South Creek, providing opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing, and wildlife observation.
Oscar Scherer State Park was established in 1956, following the donation of 460 acres by Elsa Scherer Burrows in memory of her father, Oscar Scherer, who invented a process for dyeing leather in 1872. In 1991, an additional 922 acres were acquired from the adjacent Palmer Ranch, expanding the park to its current size and enhancing its role in preserving the rare scrub habitat essential for the endangered Florida scrub-jay.
