History

Antelope Island, the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, has a rich tapestry of human history. Indigenous peoples, including the Fremont and Shoshone, utilized the island for thousands of years before European exploration. In 1845, explorer John C. Frémont and frontiersman Kit Carson named the island after hunting pronghorn antelope there. The late 19th century saw the establishment of the Fielding Garr Ranch, which became one of the longest continuously operated ranches in the western United States. In 1969, the state of Utah designated the island as a state park to preserve its unique natural and historical resources.
