Barr Lake State Park's history is deeply intertwined with Colorado's agricultural development. In the late 19th century, the area now known as Barr Lake was utilized for irrigation purposes, with a dam constructed in 1908 to combine two smaller reservoirs into a single body of water, supplying vital resources to nearby sugar beet farmers. Recognizing the area's potential for recreation and wildlife conservation, Colorado Parks and Wildlife received a recreational lease for Barr Lake in 1975, and by 1977, Barr Lake State Park was officially opened to the public.
